The hunting lodge is in the Wairarapa province in the southern-most part of the North Island. A property of some 16,000 acres, it provides some of the best Red Deer hunting to be had anywhere. The reserve runs to the sea with a spectacular outlook from the hills high above.
This property offers a wide variety of hunting from bush stalking to grassy clearings and shooting from good vantage points. The latter point being particularly pertinent for those that are not in the physical condition required for stalking the animals in heavy bush.
Animal numbers are higher than anywhere else in our experience and just the sheer population of deer makes this an exciting place to hunt. The stags average ten to twelve points and although not as heavy in their antler conformation as Taupo, they are usually a very pretty and symmetrical head. Most hunts here are for a minimum of three days with perhaps five being the optimum. In that time barring acts of God, your success is guaranteed.
Accommodation
A large two bunk room lodge is set right in the heart of the bush. It has its own water supply, hot shower, flush toilet, excellent cooking and heating facilities, with electricity and carpet throughout. It is very comfortable, peaceful and relaxing.
Access
Access to this and around the property is by four wheel drive. Clients can fly to Wellington, which is the nearest major town or Masterton, thus saving the five hour drive from Taupo. Another option is to helicopter direct from Wellington.
Hunting Season
The New Zealand Government does not at this stage apply set hunting seasons or licence fees for the hunting of big game animals in New Zealand. The only seasonal factor for trophy hunters being the period of the year when the stags cast their antlers to grow new ones. Wild boar and Trophy Goat are available all year round.
Generally those seeking trophy heads should avoid the Spring and first part of summer i.e. late September until March.

Premium Hunting Time
The Roar or the Rutt is the best time to hunt Deer, being the mating season when species such as Red, Sika and Fallow Deer become quite vocal and therefore are easier to locate.
The Red Deer begins to Rutt during late March and through April with the Sika Stags beginning in April and continuing through May as does the Fallow Stag. Although the rut is the most popular time to hunt, very often the June, July and August period just after the Roar is just as productive
With regard to Wild Boar and Goat, the time of the year is not critical, with good trophies being taken all year round.
You may hunt Turkey Down Under in New Zealand with us at any time from mid July through to mid November.
Arms Permits
Under New Zealand law, visiting hunters bringing their own firearms into New Zealand must obtain a firearms Tourist Licence from New Zealand Police at the International airport on their arrival. It is a simple formality which costs $25.00 N.Z., the licence being valid for 12 months. Please note pistols and side arms are not permitted in New Zealand. If a visiting hunter chooses to use our firearms no permit is required, the guides licence is deemed sufficient.
Accommodation
Depending on location for the hunting accommodation varies from our own hunting lodge in the Wairarapa, to bush cabins or farm hosting. If the client wishes to stay in lodges or motels and hunt on a daily basis there is an excellent range of such accommodation in Taupo

Clothing and Footwear
Hunting clothes should be of woollen or thermal material for warmth and body protection. Also this clothing make little noise when brushed against the undergrowth. Footwear should consist of two pairs of light but sturdy boots with good grip.
Trophies and Taxidermy
Your guide will cape and salt your trophies. Mounting can be arranged here in New Zealand and you may have your trophies dispatched freight forward by air freight to your specified destination. We will complete all necessary documentation
Multiple Species Hunt
A multiple species hunt is entirely practical in the Taupo region due to the close proximity of the various species. In a 12-14 day hunting trip you may hunt all the species listed and probably have time to fit in a spot of trout fishing also!
'Fair Chase' Hunts
The options listed are all' FAIR CHASE' hunts and we cannot guarantee that the necessary trophy will be taken, so much depends on the individual hunter's skill. We do guarantee a high standard of service and the presence of trophy animals and are proud of our success rate

Guaranteed Hunts
We can arrange guaranteed hunts when required, these take place behind wire in
Safari type parks. It is however our preference to promote fair chase hunting
Trophy Fees
Trophy fees are payable to the landowners for the animals taken. The fee
is also payable should the animal be wounded or lost, however this rarely happens.
No trophy fees payable in the Wairarapa area.
Thar & Chamois
We can arrange such hunts for you with highly recommended guides in the South Island.
Equipment
We supply all ground transport, guns and ammo upon request. The Turkey hunters will need their own Cammo gear and by all means bring your own favourite 'Shootin Iron'
Our hunting/guide ratio is 2:1.

SHEARWATER LODGE

 |
“Puhi Peaks” is a magnificent and unique property on the North Eastern coast of NZ's South Island, just 30km from the small farming and fishing town of Kaikoura. The area takes in a portion of South Island Mountains, which, at 1500ft higher than Queenstown's Remarkables Mountain Range, is the highest privately owned property in New Zealand.
In its upper reaches, “Puhi Peaks” is a pristine alpine wonderland, and in 2004 the area became the location of Shearwater Lodge when Alpine Discovery Ltd and Kaikoura Wilderness Walks was established.
In 2005 the Board of Alpine Discovery Ltd endorsed the setting up of a charitable trust for the protection of the endangered seabird, the Huttons Shearwater, and also set in motion the process to have the entire upper part of the area protected in perpetuity under a QE11 National Trust Protection Covenant. This area is now known as the Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve.

Frequently asked Questions
- How do you hunt these things?
All our hunts are spot and stalk free range hunts so good optics are a must. Once a potential trophy is identified we may spend the rest of the day stalking it. Most animals are shot at a range from between 100 to 400 yards
- What will the weather be like?
March April May autumn/fall expect cold nights and changeable weather with some rain. Warm clothing essential but be prepared for some hot days. June July August expect winter conditions with possibly some very light snow - warm clothing essential
- What will the terrain be like?
For Red Stag, chamois, goat, ram, and boar, you will be hunting in coastal alpine areas which have good access and have a network of walking trails, but expect to deviate across hillsides and creek beds etc
All Thar Hunting is in inland mountain country with some vehicle access. Expect most hunting to be away from formed trails
A moderate level of fitness and good mobility is desirable
- When is the best time to come?
For red stag the rut/roar mating period lasts from April through to May when the stags are out with the hinds, but they can be hunted through to September, after that they shed their antlers
Chamois May is mating time late April through to June is is the optimum time
Tahr late May-June is mating time these can be hunted through to October when good bachelor mobs of bulls can be encountered in lower terrain
Other species can be hunted April to October
- Can I bring my own Rifle?
Yes, there is no difficulty in bringing conventional hunting rifles into NZ
Please advise us at least 1 month before arrival and we will assist you in obtaining your visitor firearms license
We can also supply rifles if required
- What Caliber is required?
• 7mm mag or similar will be sufficient
- What type of accommodation can I expect?
Tahr hunting will be from a rustic mountain cabin (own sleeping bag required) in the hunting area or from a farmstay accommodation.
Other species are hunted from an upmarket lodge situated in the hunting area. Accommodation here is in private guest-rooms with super king beds, central heating, attached ensuite bathroom. For more information regarding the accommodation, see http://www.kaikourawilderness.co.nz/Track/Accomodation.aspx
- Can my wife or non hunting partner accompany me?
Yes, we can organize other activities for non-hunters if necessary
- What about Taxidermy and how long does it take for my trophy to reach home?
Your guide will field dress your trophy and ensure that it is properly cared for, we will then organize a qualified taxidermist to complete the head skinning process and expedite your trophy and ship it off to your taxidermist which normally takes 3 to 6 weeks.
We can also arrange for your trophy to be mounted here in NZ where mounting costs are considerably less - Please note all Taxidermy costs are additional.
